We use Lucy Calkins and Columbia University Teacher's College as a model for literacy instruction. The emphasis is ample student reading at the appropriate individual level*, as well as strengthening skills in nonfiction reading and the connection between reading and writing.
We use a structure called “Balanced Literacy”. Balanced Literacy is a framework designed to help all students learn to read and write effectively. Dilworth ES has implemented an integrated model of Balanced Literacy to ensure that the needs of all of our students are met.
*Developed by Irene Fountas and Gay Su Pinnell, the guided reading level system gives a more precise reading level for books.
